This exciting investigation develops students’ conceptual understanding that every fraction can be named in many different but equivalent ways. Through experiences with concrete object, and with diagrams, students compare amounts to determine equivalence. When students have a solid understanding of equivalency they begin to mentally create equivalent fractions by dividing area, comparing distances in a fraction chart, and trading parts. In real-world situations, students explore equivalent fractions represented symbolically and visually and begin to experiment with fraction operations.
